Assessment 2

Frank was using the ethos, pathos and logos throughout his speech to persuade the council and audience that suspending Charlie would not be the appropriate choice to make. His pathos, the confidence and conviction in his voice about the character Charlie is. His ethos is his service record and what is accounted in his memory. Painting a vivid memory, not only creating the image but also help creating emotion. The logos is linked to Charlie's future and his strong character will benefit the school and possibly one day the world.

I believe his vivid image of young boys losing limbs help create that emotional appeal. And talking about the amputated soul is worse because you can't recover from that. So that itself people understand he has personally experienced that.

As he is persuading the audience the value of challenge was being used. Because it portrays the uphill battle and how the odds were against him and now they are against Charlie. So that helps with the connection.

Reich's parables that could be applied here is the Triumphant Individual. Because Charlie could've easily found the easy way out but he chose to challenge and face the consequences. And with Frank's help there is a greater chance of him overcoming the challenges.

Frank was speaking from an authority perspective. As he kept talking to the committee and even kept asking, "Who are you talking to." For him his credibility and facts allowed him to speak the way he did.

    1. Volume is one way he help used paralinguistics, the change of tone and pitch helped keep the attention of the audience. He still remained bold at some points, but when needed he had a sincere voice, more when pleading for Charlie. So it helped them realize he is important that he has emotion himself.
    2. Next would be the symbolism and analogies. As he Frank called them boys and kept going back and forth with the young boys he was referring to that lost limbs. In a sense he was telling the committee this is a critical decision. Not only today but will set the tone for the rest of his life.
   3. And last of it was his tempo of the speech. He was very precise and kept it well maintained as he was speaking boldly to the committee.

Persuasion Speech

Topic: American Education System
Specific Purpose: Reformatting the Public School System
Thesis Statement: Dismissing Standardized Testing in public schools and creating more after school programs would help create a better learning environment.

I. Introduction
A. Attention-Getting Step: Showcase a student.
B. Tie to Audience:
C. Credibility Material:
D. Thesis & Preview: I will go over three main points in how we can reformat the public school system. First get rid of standardized testing, then hold teachers accountable, and third create more after school programs. And as I share these points with you I hope that it will create an opportunity to open ideas to the floor on how we can present this to better help the future generations.

II. Body
A. Standardized Testing needs to be dismissed.
1. It creates a system that tells students to fit this certain mold in order to be considered    intelligent.
a. The school system is not creating ways to help students learn but creating ways on how to take test.
b. Graduation test, considered standardized testing, do not promote knowledge, skills and habits needed to be successful in college or any specific skill set. (Fairtest)
c. 6 out of 10 first year college students feel they are not ready for their postsecondary studies. Even though they may have taken college prep classes and other exit exams it does not ensure college readiness. (Higher Education)
2. The United States education system is average at best when compared to the rest of the world.
a. The United States scored below average in math and barely the average when it came to science and reading. (The Atlantic)

c. There is a high school dropout every 26 seconds. High school dropouts commit 3 out of every 4 crimes.

B. Implement Finland’s Education System with adjustments.
1. Finland is consistently ranked as one of the top countries in the world with the best education.
2. Some of the criteria for the Finnish education system on how they differ from the United States: Little standardized testing, grades aren’t given until high school, school funding is higher in middle school, they separate into academic and vocational tracks their last 3 years of high school, broken up into learning styles, and given diagnostic testing for students so they are able to give extra help if needed.

C. Creating better learning environments.
1. With an adjusted system, I imagine more actual learning and students actually being prepared than just knowing how to cram and take test.
2. There will be very a never ending cycle of successful students throughout the US. Not enough creativity to help shape the United States of tomorrow.

III. Conclusion
A. Summary: Improving the school system helps the shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Reich's Cultural Parable's

Jon Stewart, host of the The Daily Show on Comedy Central, usually shares recent events and poke fun at what has happened. It is definitely a comedic show with real stories throughout the world. In this case, he tries starts his show by sharing what has happened in Charleston, South Carolina with the church shooting that was racially motivated.

As he is trying to keep his composure during his show, I felt that the Benevolent Community is applicable when talking about Reich's Cultural Parables. The premise of this speech was driven by his emotion and attitude. He was very heartfelt as he was explaining the tragedy that has happened. He invited his viewers to open up and take his perspective on whats going on with America today. Stewart has shared the history of America, he shared what he thought was damaging the United States of America and kind of shared what could be a solution in helping the United States become a better country.

Larsen's Cultural Images and Myths

Ray Lewis is one of the greatest Linebackers and quite possibly one of the greatest football players to ever play the game. He is speaking to his Alma Mater the University of Miami and how he became the person he is today not only as a football player but as an individual as well.

The first component is notice throughout his speech is the possibility of success. He talks about how the cards were not in his favor and what he had to do to get noticed. Also shared that he has played with more talent but he has given more effort and that has made him successful. And makes personal because he said, "effort is between you and you, and nobody can't give you effort."

The value of challenge is another component that Lewis shares in his speech. He talks about work and that he had to do that all himself. Lewis having being a student athlete understood the challenges that they go through especially at the University of Miami. And some of the things that could be a challenge is usage of time and priorities, which go hand in hand.

This speech that is given I believe gives the audience a sense of emotion and attitude. Because the credibility of Lewis it really gives that much more power added to his speech. Lewis personally knew what it took to be one of the greatest at every level that he played at. He knew it was no easy task and challenge but has overcome all adversity by doing what he knows best, and that was his effort and attitude.

"God Made A Farmer" Assessment

1. As I watch and listen to this video, I feel and made to believe that farmers are in a category of their own. That no one truly knows how a farmer life is unless that individual is a farmer. There is a sense of pride for one being a farmer. The ethics are found in truth and hard work is what being a farmer is all about, with the sense of religion. The narrator gives this sense of foundation of old fashion values and a profound sense of how America came about and how it evolved.

2. The central route of the message is religion, hard work and perseverance. Just with the religious references, and how much the farmer goes through a daily basis physically, mentally and emotionally. I think of the saying, "God is in the details," as the narrator talks about being a farmer.

The peripheral route in this message is just the conviction of the Paul Harvey. The description of the daily grind that goes hand in hand with the photos being shared. Honestly, it made me think of how I would handle being a farmer as America as it was developing.

3. The pathos that is created in the message starts with Paul Harvey's voice. It has a sense of a grandfather telling a story and you always listen to grandpa when he tells stories. There is a sense of being dependent as well when describing farmers. The pictures with narrator makes it that much more powerful.

The logos is created throughout the history of farmers. I believe the average person throughout the United States has an understanding of the hard work farmers. So when the message is being told by Harvey and the slide show is passing we feel we have a sense of what they went through. A picture says a thousand words.

The ethos is just the lifestyle of the farmer. Some of the pictures showed the rough hands that will never be clean or scar free. The eyes of a tired individual working all day.

4. The episitemic perspective is focused on the lifestyle of the farmer. His daily grind, his perspective and attitudes everyday. Focusing on hard work, family and religion everyday as well.

5. The narrative perspective creates the moment I believe. It creates the picture in itself and backs the slideshow. The slideshow is powerful but the narrator makes it that much more powerful. It creates a dependent individual who wakes up everyday because there was a point and time when the economy depended on farmers, at least to my knowledge.

6. As I've watched this commercial I think parable I think of is the Triumphant Individual. As the farmer is the epitome of hard work and perseverance. Things might not go as planned, that goes for the farm, family or themselves  but they fight through it knowing there is a greater purpose. Farmers are very soft spoken but very hard working.

7. The objectives that can be taken from Marwell & Schmitt's Taxonomy of 16 influence tactics are a few things. Positive expertise, I feel Paul Harvey's voice establishes credibility and authority throughout the video. Moral appeal applies with the standards of farmers, God, family and everything else after that. I think it also portrays integrity, honestly and other high ethical values.  Positive self-feeling with the example at the end with the truck. Like if you wanna feel like a farmer does then buy a dodge truck. Positive Esteem of Others is another one with the sense of people who watched the video probably even thought of farmers more highly with the speech in the background.

8. Needs: I believe the needs was the reassurance of worth when speaking about this commercial. It showed the value and need of farmers and how essential they are.
Emotions: Pride is the emotion that is driven through this video. Like this is what we work hard for. And it is displayed very strongly throughout the commercial.
Attitudes: The attitude is that farmers are a part from everyone else. That this is the ultimate calling in someone's life is to be a farmer. Because farmer's take care of everyone else and knows what they have to do to be content with themselves.
Consistency: That every farmer is religious and that every farmer has a lot on their plate. That they have very controlled emotion because they have so much to deal with.

9. Understanding the needs premise, I believe that sense of roots is best related. As I watch this commercial I get a sense of patriotism and the humble beginnings of the country we have the privilege we live in today.

10. The attitudes I felt were being felt was the importance of history, family and religion. Again the pictures really helped install the attitude of family, the speech with religion and the history of the voice of Paul Harvey. This is something we are working towards and where this great country came from.

Become A Teacher

Ministry of Education, put an ad out in 2011 about the importance of not only attending the right school but having the right teachers. Simply showing the positive impact that one teacher can have on a student.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPROyH3iw90

The ad starts out with a young man pulling up to a school and getting out of his car. Then as he travels through the school, the young man by the name of Edwin has flashbacks to when he was attending that school. It shows glimpses of him as young teenager and struggling through school. It goes back and forth with Edwin making bad decisions but the teacher always checking up on him and him always ignoring her. Then comes the text, "Didn't you have bigger Dreams, Edwin?" Then it goes back to the present time as he a grown man and takes Mrs.Chong out to dinner as he once promised.

Abilities: It is quite evident in the ability not only with the teacher that is being portrayed but also the student. The student seemed to make some wrong choices but it was also the teacher that went out of her way to reach out to that student. The motivational factor shows that a little extra effort goes a long way. As the student had his learning curve and that he ended up becoming the man he wanted and needed to be.

Trigger: In the video we understand that the teacher saw potential in the student and understood what he could do. And even though the student never responded to her text messages, she was a positive voice throughout his life. And that triggered him to become the man he really wanted to be.

The premise of this ad displays emotional security and reassurence of worth. The teacher constantly being positive and checking up with the student is a sign of that. According to the Maslow's Hierarchy this ad demostrates most of which he teaches, with esteem, belonging, safety, self-actualization. It is a very joyful and positive ad, in a sense it could display a sense of fear in not knowing what can happen. When I watch this ad I think to myself a bumper sticker I remember seeing when I was very young, "If you can read this, thank a teacher." How true that is especially with personal experiences and how I can relate to this young man that this teacher never gave up on.
