Larsen's Cultural Images and Myths

Ray Lewis is one of the greatest Linebackers and quite possibly one of the greatest football players to ever play the game. He is speaking to his Alma Mater the University of Miami and how he became the person he is today not only as a football player but as an individual as well.

The first component is notice throughout his speech is the possibility of success. He talks about how the cards were not in his favor and what he had to do to get noticed. Also shared that he has played with more talent but he has given more effort and that has made him successful. And makes personal because he said, "effort is between you and you, and nobody can't give you effort."

The value of challenge is another component that Lewis shares in his speech. He talks about work and that he had to do that all himself. Lewis having being a student athlete understood the challenges that they go through especially at the University of Miami. And some of the things that could be a challenge is usage of time and priorities, which go hand in hand.

This speech that is given I believe gives the audience a sense of emotion and attitude. Because the credibility of Lewis it really gives that much more power added to his speech. Lewis personally knew what it took to be one of the greatest at every level that he played at. He knew it was no easy task and challenge but has overcome all adversity by doing what he knows best, and that was his effort and attitude.

  1. I totally agree with you about this video having to do with the possibility of success myth. Most of the players at the University of Miami aren't going to reach the level that Ray Lewis attained. The student athletes will probably be inspired and motivated by his speech because of the success he had and how great of a linebacker he became. His credibility and his use of emotion are huge factors in this. His appeal to them that what it took was hard work creates a feeling that anyone could be like him if they work hard enough. Very good post and choice of artifact.
